The “Raw Prawn” Update
We’ve recently gone through Come On Aussie with a fine tooth comb… doing a lot of restructuring to the categories available there…
And a fairly “disturbing” result (for some webmasters that is) of that restructuring is that we removed over 750 listings that are no longer compliant with the standards expected.
As part of this restructuring, we DO actually visit every website being “moved”… and if the actual site is junk then it’s gooooone from our index as well!
Now my definition of “junk” includes links to pages/sites that:
- are little more than phone book listings
- are obviously setup as “doorway” pages for SEO purposes
- have been built mainly to display adsense ads
- are obviously multiple “clones” of the same design etc in different niches
- contain duplicate content under different domain names
- are listed for sale
In a nutshell… if the site did NOT provide worthwhile content or value to an end user… it was dropped!
In light of all the animal names given to major recent search engine updates (Penguin, Panda etc)… I’ve called this one our “Raw Prawn” update of July 2012… ‘cos the sites I’ve killed were really “off”!!!
And there’s a lot more to come as we continue this restructure to ensure that not only can we continue providing a useful directory service… but we also keep our record with Google intact – and by “record”, I mean NOT receiving any nasty letters about Come On Aussie’s content or linking practices… touch wood! 🙂
Cheers for now.
